Every Day:

  • Make beds.
  • Pick up clothes and throw dirty ones in the laundry.
  • Clean the bathroom sink and shower after each use.
  • Straighten up newspapers, magazines and other papers.
  • Clean the kitchen. Load dishes into the dishwasher after each meal (or wash and dry them by hand). Wipe counters after each use. Clean the sink and wipe the cooking surfaces (including the microwave) after each use. Empty the garbage.

Every Week:

  • Dust furniture, shelves, radiatiors, woodwork, pictures and mirrors.
  • Vacuum rugs and floors.
  • Vacuum or brush upholstered furniture.
  • Empty the wastebaskets.
  • Wash bathroom basins, fixtures and floors.
  • Sweep or mot the kitchen floor.
  • Clean range or cooktop burners.
  • Wipe the refrigerator and the fronts of kitchen cabinets.
  • Do laundry.

Every Month:

  • Vacuum or brush curtains and draperies.
  • Clean under and around furniture and appliances.
  • Wipe woodwork, windowsills and walls where needed.
  • Dust or brush lampshades and blinds.
  • Polish floors and furniture, if needed.
  • Vacuum books and bookshelves.
  • Organize or store books, CDs, DVDs, photos and other loose paraphernalia. 
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture, cleaning under cushions and in crevices.
  • Clean the oven if needed.

Seasonally (Spring):

  • Go through closets, discard unwanted clothes; clean winter coats.
  • Pack away winter clothes (or have them stored at a dry cleaner).
  • Rotate mattresses and wash mattress pads and blankets.
  • Hang blankets on a clothesline to air out before putting them away. 
  • Wash curtains and draperies or have them dry-cleaned.
  • Clean the oven, if necessary.
  • Dust coils behind or underneath the refrigerator.
  • Clean blades of ceiling fans.
  • Shampoo rugs and upholstery.
  • Have central air conditioners serviced. Clean or replace filters in room air conditioners; vacuum and reinstall units.
  • Open attic louvers.
  • Secure any loose shingles or siding.
  • Touch up paint on outside of house.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts; clear debris from roof.
  • Remove storm windows.
  • Patch screens.
  • Wash windows.


Seasonally (Summer):

  • Clean the oven, if necessary.        
  • Dust coils behind or underneath the refrigerator.        
  • Have furnace cleaned and tuned. Clean or change furnace filters.         
  • Clean out the garage.        

Seasonally (Fall):

  • Go through closets and discard unwanted clothes.
  • Pack away summer clothes (or have them stored at a dry cleaner).
  • Rotate mattresses and wash mattress pads and blankets. 
  • Wash curtains and draperies or have them dry-cleaned.
  • Clean the oven, if necessary.
  • Dust coils behind or underneath the refrigerator.
  • Clean filters and reservoirs of humidifiers.
  • Clean blades of ceiling fans.
  • Store or cover and seal window air conditioners. Cover central air-conditioning units and schedule a cleaning every few years.
  • Close attic louvers.
  • Check seals on windows and doors; weather-strip, if needed.              
  • Change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries.              
  • Have the chimney or furnace flue cleaned.              
  • Touch up exterior paint.              
  • Clean gutters and downspouts; clear debris from roof. 
  • Put up storm windows.

Seasonally (Winter):

  • Clean the oven, if necessary.              
  • Dust coils behind or underneath the refrigerator.              
  • Clean out the basement.              
  • Wax floors and furniture, if necessary.
